SRN Midlands was founded by Adam Chen. After starting his PhD, Adam found a lack of training opportunities for handling emotionally demanding research (EDR). When starting the EDR journey, there is the underlying assumption that one has experience working in this field; however, further support and development can be minimal at times.
Whilst he had gained skills throughout his undergraduate and volunteering experience, Adam saw a lack of opportunities to improve upon his skills and resilience, but also, more significantly, a lack of support for early career researchers. In particular, there was little support for students, beyond the supervisory team, for those conducting EDR.
Upon examination, there were some subject-specific networks or more global support networks, but none were local or easily accessible. This sparked a conversation with the MGS ESRC DTP and the University of Birmingham staff on how best to support other students within the area.
In Adam's original notes, he wanted to formalise a peer-led group in order to support PGRs in EDR, thus SRN Midlands was created.

Since starting SRN Midlands, it has slowly evolved and adapted into something that works for all its members. It aims to be as flexible as possible to open up opportunities for all its members, no matter what their background or skills. Admittedly, it was difficult to spark engagement at first, given that I was only three months into my PhD and had little to no experience in leading a research network. But through several discussions and revisions, SRN Midlands has become a network which can enables other members to create an open discussion to share, support and encourage.
