This workshop explores the dimensions of reflexivity in qualitative and emotionally demanding research contexts. We will unpack different notions of reflexivity, considering how self-reflexive practice can deepen understanding, enhance rigour, and support researchers’ well-being.
At the same time, we’ll discuss some of the challenges and vulnerabilities that reflexivity entails, especially when working with sensitive topics or emotionally charged material.
Participants will also have the opportunity to engage in a few practical exercises designed to foster self-awareness, critical reflection, and care in their own research practice.
Katharina is an associate professor at the University of Birmingham. Dr Katharina Karcher's qualitative empirical research focuses on protest movements and political violence in the 20th and 21st centuries. In this context, she is particularly interested in questions of gender, race, class, dis/ability, and political ideology. She is also interested in the question of how researchers navigate emotionally demanding research, and what institutions can do to better support this important work.
